After a person’s home or business is unfortunately damaged by fire, they immediately want to know the extent of the damage that the fire has caused. Understandably so, the property owner would want to visit the burn site to see what kind of damage has been done, but this should never happen due to risks such as the fire reigniting, a falling or collapsing structure, and poor air quality due to smoke and fumes. Nobody should be allowed into the site until a fire marshal declares the area safe.

After this is all taken care of, the cleaning process begins. Cleanup should be taken care of through a professional cleanup company with the experience and equipment necessary to safely and effectively clean up the fire damage. There are certain things that individuals can do themselves before a cleaning company can begin to clean the property as well. One of the biggest things they can do is dry everything possible. The reasoning for this is prevention of further damage to the property as mold can develop in wet areas. After this, individuals can do things such as covering undamaged furniture and objects to prevent them from becoming damaged. To learn more about what to do before a cleanup team shows up and more about the cleaning process itself, visit the restoration resource and read their detailed description.

After meth is “cooked” in a certain location for some time, many of the chemicals used in the process can contaminate the property. These chemicals pose many health risks if the situation is not handled properly. For these reasons, after a meth lab has been properly seized by law enforcement, there must be a decontamination team to handle it beyond that point. Teams such as the cleanup team at Global Priority Cleanup should be called to properly take care of the contamination problem from the meth lab.

Decontamination teams wear the proper protective equipment to safely access the area and begin cleaning the area. While there is a varying level of decontamination needed depending on the severity of the meth lab, professionals need to be contacted rather than having somebody try to decontaminate the area themselves. The steps to clean the premises generally follow these guidelines: general sanitation, airing out of the building, disposal of contamination, surface inspection, plumbing inspection, and painting. For a more detailed explanation and summary of steps to handle a meth lab scenario, click here.

Hoarding, simply put, is a piling of possessions that an individual or family can not seem to get rid of for a number of possible reasons. Hoarding can sometimes get so bad that individuals cannot walk throughout their house or even lay in their bed because of the pile ups. However, the causes of hoarding are fairly unknown to the average individual. The causes of hoarding are generally psychological rather than plain laziness.

Hoarders often have a very difficult time getting rid of their possessions because they are concerned that they will need them in the future when this is often not the case. They also sometimes feel that the sentimental value of their possessions is too much or they simply do not want to be wasteful with their possessions. There are also disorders that are associated with hoarding such as psychiatric disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder.

Additionally, there are many health and personal risks associated with hoarding. Excessive hoarding often leads to the tenant of a house being kicked out of the residence if the landlord deems it violates the lease. Health-wise, hoarding increases the risk of an individual to fall and become injured. At times, hoarding can result in respiratory problems due to mold, feces, or infestation that are created as a result of hoarding. Other risks associated with hoarding include becoming trapped in a residence, animal safety risks, and child health risks. If you know of anybody that could be in risk due to hoarding, do not hesitate to call a professional to come help with the problem.

Due to the fact that our last post alluded to the dangers of mold, it is only fit that we also talk about the signs of mold in a home and further discuss the dangers of mold in a home as well. There are several causes of mold ranging from any type of moisture or water damage and areas with a high amount of humidity or poor ventilation. The signs of mold growth are fairly visible to the naked eye as they are seen with things such as cracked paint or peeling drywall and actual visible mold itself.

The list of problems associated with mold, according to ADVNT are as follows:

Suppressed immune system

Respiratory problems

Sinusitis and nasal congestion

Asthma

Bronchitis

Lung tissue damage

Eye, nose and throat irritation

Dry hacking cough

Skin rashes and irritation

Memory impairment

Difficulty concentrating

Irritable bowel syndrome

Body aches and pains

Chronic fatigue

Food intolerances and allergies

Headaches

Dizziness

Mood swings

It goes without saying that mold is a very large problem in any home or business and needs to be taken care of immediately after noticed. It is not recommended that an individual attempts to clean mold themselves due to the dangers associated with this procedure, but rather that a professional remediation company is contacted to clean the area.

With the large amount of rain that has swept through the Midwestern area, it is important to not only be prepared in case of a flood or flooded basement, but also know the steps to take afterwards. Flooded basements and water damage in a house are not only a nuisance, but they also cause damage after they have been cleaned. Flooded basements can lead to things such as respiratory problems, damage to the building and equipment, decreased property value, mold and other problems.

The reasons for flooding are numerous and include things such as a leak or crack in your basement, a faulty sump pump, a bad sewage system, failure of drains, and many other things. It is essential to check these things for problems regularly, especially in the spring when there is generally a large amount of rain. If your basement has flooded, take the correct steps and call a professional to fix the problem and be sure the problem does not happen again due to the additional problems that flooding causes.
